The 24-year-old dramatically ended his sixteen year association with North East rivals Sunderland when he moved to St. James' Park on a free transfer in June.
The boyhood Newcastle supporter started his first competitive fixture for his new club against Premier League champions City.
One of eight new arrivals to join up with Alan Pardew's squad this summer, he endured a losing start to life with the Magpies as goals from David Silva and Sergio Agüero saw them off.
"I enjoyed getting that first game out of the way and it was a proud occasion," Colback told BBC Newcastle.
"I'm buzzing to be here and I hope that shows from the way I perform on a Saturday.
"I had a few of my family there and friends texting me good luck and the fans have been brilliant since I signed."
Colback was making his debut alongside Daryl Janmaat, Emmanuel Riviere and Remy Cabella while Ayoze Perez came on as a substitute.
"We've got to take the positives out of today," Colback continued.
"We pushed the Premier League champions very close and I don't think we deserved to come off without any points."
