From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The Everton manager, David Moyes, is making a move for the Bolton Wanderers captain Jay-Jay Okocha as he looks for end-of-season bargains.

Moyes has spoken with the Nigerian player's advisers about the possibility of him going to Goodison this summer on a free transfer when his contract at the Reebok Stadium expires.

Okocha is looking for the best possible signing-on fee and salary but wants to stay in the Premiership and he would accept a switch to Everton if the terms are right.

Moyes knows the midfield is a priority and Okocha's talent has been proved at club and international level and the committed Christian's off-field behaviour is also exemplary - something Moyes appreciates.

Everton already have Okocha's international team-mate and friend Jospeh Yobo in their defence so it would be easy for them to play together. But above all Okocha would be a crowd-pleaser for Everton fans who have suffered some mediocre displays this season.

Okocha's advisers say they are ready to sit down and agree figures with Bolton but they are also talking to rival clubs, including Everton.Celtic have also registered their interest in Okocha, but he would prefer to stay in England, even if there is the Champions' League football on offer in Glasgow.
