Frank Lampard has praised Mohamed Salah for having the courage to leave Chelsea and rejuvenate his career at Serie A side Roma, before joining Liverpool ahead of this season.

Salah moved to Chelsea from Basel in 2014 for £11m, but failed to force his way into Jose Mourinho’s first-team before leaving on loan for Fiorentina less than a year later.

He then spent a season on loan at Roma before signing for the club permanently, for just €15m.

Salah was superb for I Giallorossi last season, scoring 15 goals in 31 Serie A matches, before Jurgen Klopp decided to spend up to €50 to bring him to Anfield.

And Lampard thinks Salah deserves great credit for having the self-confidence to leave Chelsea to rebuild his career at another club.

“There shouldn’t be too much finger pointing [at Chelsea],” Lampard told BTSport.

“I was there with Salah, he was young.

“It was probably an early stage in his career, it didn’t work for him, he went away and did well.

“(Kevin) De Bruyne was in the same situation.

“It’s very hard - Chelsea had an abundance of talent in those positions at that time.

“So I’d rather focus on the player. Credit to them for going away, working hard and coming back.

“He’s now got more personality and a feeling of deserving to be there.”
