The World Cup-winning Germany international suffered a “crack” in his knee during the 2-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge that has ruled him out for at least another four weeks, and possibly until the New Year depending on how long his rehabilitation takes.
But Özil took to his Twitter account to keep fans up-to-date with his condition, and posted a picture of his knee strapped up in a large brace as he performed exercises in a bid to return to action.
Along with the picture, Özil said: “No, this is neither a red carpet nor a magic carpet. It is just the place where I'm working for my comeback.”
The post comes days after another update which showed the Arsenal midfielder lifting weights and strengthening his legs, albeit with delicacy given the injury.
Özil has been criticised for his form this season having cost the Gunners £42.5m last summer, and he has been somewhat shown up by this year’s summer-signing Alexis Sanchez. The Chilean has already notched eight goals since arriving at the Emirates, compared with Özil’s seven that he has scored in 13 months he’s spent with the Gunners.
He posted a third picture on his Instagram account that showed the recovery phase of his session, with his leg strapped above and below the knee to help improve blood circulation – a technique that also helps to reduce swelling in the injured area.
Since Özil’s injury, the Gunners have picked up four points from six in the Premier League as well as a last-gasp victory in Europe. With the Gunners trailing 1-0 to Anderlecht and just minutes two minutes of normal time remaining, two goals from Kieran Gibbs and Lukas Podolski saved their blushes and put them in a commanding position to progress to the Champions League first knockout round.
