From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Matteo Darmian has hit the ground running at Manchester United, so much so the Italian right-back has been voted the club's Player of the Month for August.

The 25-year-old, who was signed from Torino for £12.7m in July, has started all six of United's matches in all competitions this season. He topped the poll on manutd.com with 42 per cent. Fans voted Chris Smalling second with 35% per cent, and Luke Shaw third with 23 per cent.

"It's important to know this is from the fans," Matteo told Manchestr United's official website. "I want to thank them. I am happy.

"I also want to thank my team-mates and everyone at the club for making me feel welcome. I have been working hard for the team."

Manager Louis van Gaal has recently said that Darmian "has fulfilled his expectations".

"A full-back firstly has to defend and then secondly he has to build up," Van Gaal said. "Thirdly, he has to attack and give an option to his fellow players in front of him. He has fulfilled my expectations of him so far."
