Mason Greenwood’s availability for Manchester United’s trip to Crystal Palace on Thursday night is in doubt with the teenager suffering from a swollen ankle, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed.

The 18-year-old striker was injured by Oriol Romeu’s late challenge during the first half of United’s 2-2 draw with Southampton on Monday night.

Greenwood played on after the tackle, which went unpunished by both referee Chris Kavanagh and Lee Mason, the match’s VAR. The youngster was eventually replaced in by Daniel James in the 84th minute.

Solskjaer said both Greenwood and Luke Shaw had suffered ankle injuries in United’s last outing, though Brandon Williams – who went off with a head injury – should be available to play at Selhurst Park.

“I’ll give Luke as much time as possible – him and Mason, their ankles are swollen and a bit blown up,” the United manager told MUTV.

On Greenwood, Solskjaer added: “In the heat of the moment he’ll play on and adrenaline gets you going, and then you get a little bit of reaction after.

“I said after the game that my ankles were a bit weak after many years of football. But obviously Mason carried on and I think it should have been looked upon by the referee definitely.”

As VAR reviewed Romeu’s challenge and took no action, the Southampton midfielder cannot be subjected to any retrospective action.

Solskjaer has named an unchanged starting line-up in United’s last five league games – with Greenwood included each time – though admitted that may change on Thursday night.

United face a gruelling period of four games in the space of 10 days, with an FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea on Sunday sandwiched by their final three Premier League fixtures.

“The team selection for Thursday is based on Thursday, not on Sunday. Sunday is irrelevant, it doesn’t come into my head at all. It’s just Thursday, so we’ll see,” Solskjaer said.

“The injury situation, there was a couple of doubts before the Southampton one, but they all reported fit on the day. And hopefully we can give them time now and not having to leave players out of injury, but as you say, there might be one or two fresh legs coming in.”
