The Spain defender, who only made his international debut earlier this year thanks to his form at Stamford Bridge, has been one of Chelsea’s standout players since joining in 2016 from Fiorentina, helping the Blues to the Premier League title in his first year with the club as well as last season’s FA Cup.
“I am so happy to stay here longer and to keep playing for one of the best teams in the world,” Alonso said on Wednesday morning.
“It’s been a very good two seasons and I am looking forward to more.”
The 27-year-old has remained part of new manager Maurizio Sarri’s plans after the Italian came in to replace Antonio Conte in the summer, with Chelsea still unbeaten in the Premier League this season.
They sit just two points off Premier League leaders Manchester City, who are the only side to have beaten Sarri’s Chelsea this season in the Community Shield back in August, and are also unbeaten in both the Europa League and Carabao Cup.
Alonso himself has one goal to his name so far this campaign which came in the 3-2 victory over Arsenal in August, along with two assists in his 10 club appearances.
Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia added: “We are delighted to be extending Marcos’ contract.
“In the past two seasons he has developed into an important player for the club, demonstrating his outstanding ability and a fantastic attitude that has helped him become a Premier League champion and Spain international.”
As well as Fiorentina, Alonso has had spells with Real Madrid, Bolton Wanderers and Sunderland, and the last of his three Spain caps came in the 2-1 victory over England last month.
