From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Manchester United centre-back Victor Lindelof has revealed that he remains playing through the pain barrier after “struggling” with a back injury for much of the current season.

The Swedish defender is the regular partner to club captain Harry Maguire at the back under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, playing 20 times in the Premier League so far this season.

Since the turn of the year the 26-year-old has been in and out of the team, though, with Eric Bailly often standing in, and Lindelof says that’s part of the planned approach to manage the pain he feels so that he is available as often as possible.

“Yeah I’ve been struggling a bit with my back. I’ve been having it for the last couple of months,” he told the club website.

“I missed a few games as well and I am just trying to manage it in a good way. I missed a few games and I came back slowly. I played one game and then I got to rest again, it felt a bit better.

“It started to come back a little bit but I’m just trying to manage it in a good way, do the recovery right and then treatment.”

Lindelof continued to explain how he was prepared to put the team needs ahead of his own discomfort, as United seek to secure a top-four finish and a Champions League spot for next season.

“I have been having these issues for the last couple of months but I’m still out there because I want to be playing, to help my team win games.

“That’s the most important thing for me. If I’m sore for a few days after it or in a bit of discomfort, that’s not a problem if the team wins. That’s the most important thing and I just want to be out there to help the team.”

United face local rivals City at the weekend in the Manchester derby, with the Red Devils trailing the league leaders by 14 points.
