Manchester United will have to play a qualifier to reach the Champions League group stage after finishing fourth in the Premier League

Manchester United will have to play a two-legged qualifying match to reach the group stage of the Champions League.

As they could only draw with now relegated Hull City, Louis van Gaal's team could only finish fourth in the Premier League.

The top three teams qualify automatically for the group stage, but the team finishing fourth will have to play a game in early August to reach the group stages.

Arsenal's win against West Brom mean they finish third.

It is not yet known who Manchester United will face. The draw for the play-off round will be made on 7 August with the first legs to be played on 18 and 19 August and the second legs on 25 and 26 August.

Manchester United are in this round with Valencia, Bayer Leverkusen, Sporting Lisbon and whichever team finishes third in Serie A.

Van Gaal's team will be a second seed if they reach the group stage, after Uefa changed the seeding system to put the champions of the top eight leagues in Europe as the top seed.

The change means that United could potentially face Bayern Munich, Juventus, Barcelona or Paris Saint-Germain in the group stage.
