Another error from David de Gea cost Manchester United all three points against Chelsea and seriously dented their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

United made a bright start to the match at Old Trafford and took the lead when Juan Mata converted Luke Shaw’s inch-perfect cross.

But Chelsea equalised just before half-time, courtesy of De Gea’s fumble. Antonio Rüdiger shot from distance only for the Spaniard to parry his tame attempt, with the ball falling kindly for Marcos Alonso to slot home.

Neither side could find a winner in the second-half which was disrupted by a serious looking injury to United defender Eric Bailly.

The draw sees Chelsea extend their lead over fifth-place Arsenal to two points. United will meanwhile need to win both of their remaining matches and hope other results go in their favour if they are to finish in the top four.
