From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Most onlookers expected the Norwegian to comfortably seal a ninth straight win in all competitions - and a record-breaking seventh at the start of a Premier League reign - but Sean Dyche's men had other ideas.
Solskjaer's United had not so much as gone behind before Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood scored for Burnley, who were dreaming of a first win at Old Trafford since 1962 until Paul Pogba and Victor Lindelof sealed a dramatic 2-2 draw.
The overriding feeling was frustration for both managers at full-time, but this could prove a valuable point for a United side who were for so long frustrated by an organised team backed up by in-form goalkeeper Tom Heaton.
An Andreas Pereira mistake allowed Barnes to smash the visitors ahead in the 51st minute and, after dealing with a deluge of attacks, Wood appeared to put the game out of reach, but that 81st-minute goal was far from the last act.
Pogba fired home a spot-kick with three minutes remaining and Lindelof struck in stoppage time in a comeback the watching Sir Alex Ferguson would have been proud of.
Player ratings
Manchester United
David de Gea - 6 out of 10
Might have helped if he was at his superlative best, though he cannot bail out his defence every week. Could do little about Barnes’ thumping effort.
Ashley Young - 5 out of 10
Could not prevent Wood’s goal after being overloaded at the far post. Delivered wayward crosses until the late one which led to the late equaliser.
Victor Lindelof - 7 out of 10
Earned himself and his team a point with the equaliser. Pulled to and fro too often by Burnley’s frontline.
Phil Jones - 5 out of 10
Made an important interception to deny Barnes mid-way through the first half but otherwise not one of his better nights.
Luke Shaw - 7 out of 10
Found Rashford well with an early cross and ventured forward regularly but was out of position in the build-up to Wood’s goal.
Nemanja Matic - 6 out of 10
Could have proved to be a liability given Burnley’s ferocious pressing but coped admirably enough.
Paul Pogba - 7 out of 10
Had one tap-in disallowed rightly for offside, kicked another against his standing leg after the ball had run out of play, but led the late comeback.
Andreas Pereira - 4 out of 10
First Premier League start since the opening day and it was clear why. Pickpocketed by Cork for Burnley’s first and largely ineffective in possession.
Juan Mata - 6 out of 10
Auditioning for a regular role in Solskjaer’s front three and showed glimpses of invention, but perhaps not enough to displace the regulars.
Marcus Rashford - 5 out of 10
In his current form, he should have converted a glaring early miss. Seemed to struggle without the influence of Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard.
Romelu Lukaku - 5 out of 10
An injury to Martial saw the Belgian retained and moved centrally. Fluffed one opportunity to beat Heaton in the second half.
Burnley
Tom Heaton - 8 out of 10
An impressive return to Old Trafford for the former United goalkeeper, again. Unlucky to see Lindelof pounce on his late save from Alexis Sanchez.
Phil Bardsley - 7 out of 10
Another United old boy. Made one outstanding first-half challenge to deny a clear-cut opportunity to Mata.
James Tarkowski - 7 out of 10
Led Burnley’s rearguard effectively and dealt with all that United could throw at him and his team-mates until the final minutes.
Ben Mee - 6 out of 10
Not quite as impressive as his defensive partner Tarkowski but still managed to keep United from creating many clear-cut opportunities.
Charlie Taylor - 6 out of 10
Willing to put his body in the way of the ball, made an important block on a Rashford attempt in the opening stages.
Jeff Hendrick - 5 out of 10
Burnley’s main creative outlet, his work ethic on the right-hand side created opportunities in the first half, but lose marks for giving away a soft penalty.
Jack Cork - 8 out of 10
Brilliant pressing for the first, spotting Pereira’s discomfort on the ball, pouncing and teeing up Barnes.
Ashley Westwood - 6 out of 10
Steady enough when required and hung the ball up in the air perfectly for Wood to add Burnley’s second.
Dwight McNeil - 5 out of 10
A quiet night for another United youth product, did not catch the eye in the way he did at City in the Cup.
Ashley Barnes - 8 out of 10
Emphatic finish for the first, which was a well-taken goal. Led Burnley’s harassment of United’s backline.
Chris Wood - 8 out of 10
Earned a goal with his performance and found it with a delicate header to double Burnley’s lead.
