The France international has failed to establish himself as a regular starter under Jose Mourinho and struggled to replicate the form of his debut season in English football.
After arriving from Monaco for £36m in August 2015, Martial ended the campaign as United’s top scorer, with 17 goals in all competitions.
However, Martial’s form has since waned and he has lost his status as an automatic starter, with the likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Juan Mata and Marcus Rashford providing competition.
“It is annoying to be on the bench, it is really annoying," he admitted to SFR Sport. “But this is a test I have to get through.
“That's the way things go when you are still developing as a player and it forms your mentality.
“It is difficult because the only thing you want is to get out there and help the team and you cannot do that when you are on the bench. But that is a choice I have to accept.
“I know that the people expect a lot from me, but perhaps they forget that I am still young.
“Everybody can think whatever they want and they can say what they want, that does not change anything for me.”
Martial has scored four goals in all competitions this season, most recently bagging a brace in the 4-1 EFL Cup quarter final victory over West Ham United.
The 21-year-old started last weekend’s 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford, but was left out of the squad for Wednesday night’s trip to Crystal Palace.
