United’s players were due back into training at their Carrington base despite the suspension of the Premier League season last week.
But following new government measures recommending that everyone should work from home if they can, the club told players not to attend.
“In light of governmental advice and the evolving situation, the team are not returning to training,” a club statement said.
Players across all ages groups will now be training individually at home, with personal fitness programmes to follow.
The club will keep the policy under constant review, though the escalation of the outbreak makes an indefinite postponement possible.
United are only the latest top-flight club to postpone training and instruct players to carry out individual fitness programmes at home.
Manchester City's players have been training away from the club's City Football Academy base since a family member of Benjamin Mendy was tested for Covid-19. The test was negative.
Liverpool suspended training at Melwood on Friday following the Premier League's announcement that fixtures will be postponed until at least 4 April.
