Manchester United are unlikely to have Angel Di Maria back in time to face Tottenham on Sunday as they look to continue their eight-match unbeaten run that has propelled them up the Premier League table.

United head to White Hart Lane off the back of a comfortable 3-1 victory over Newcastle on Boxing Day, but the two day turnaround is unlikely to be enough time for the Argentinian international to recover from an injury setback he picked up in training on Christmas Eve.

United are missing a number of midfielders, with Di Maria’s pelvis injury adding to long-term absentee Daley Blind (knee) and Ander Herrera, who is unlikely to feature as he continues to struggle with a foot muscle injury. Meanwhile Marouane Fellaini, who was initially ruled out by manager Louis van Gaal with a “mystery illness”, is reported to have actually suffered a rib injury and will miss the entire festive period.

Adnan Januzaj is not expected to play until New Year’s Day due to illness, but there is good news surrounding England left-back Luke Shaw as the 19-year-old has recovered from injury to return to action – however the form of Ashley Young is likely to keep him out of the side.

Defender Marcus Rojo remains sidelined with a thigh injury, while Phil Jones appears to have shaken off a minor knock he picked up early in the victory over the Magpies.

United face Spurs at midday on Sunday 28 December and can provisionally close the gap to second-placed Manchester City to just four points if they emerge victorious.
