From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Nemanja Vidic’s decision to retire from football has led Manchester United fans to debate his best moments in the red shirt.

The Serb spent eight years at Old Trafford and quickly became a crowd favourite, famed for his tough defending.

The centre-back won the Champions League, five Premier League titles and three League Cups, and departed in 2014 a genuine United hero.

So, what was Vidic’s finest hour for United? There are dozens of moments to choose from, and we have tried to pick the best five in the gallery below:

“The time has come for me to hang up my boots,” Vidic said in a statement released by United’s official website. “The injuries I have had in the last few years have taken their toll.

“I would like to thank all the players I have played with, all the managers and staff I have worked with, and say a big ‘thank you’ to the fans for their support over the years.”
