Manchester City: A look back at 2018

Manchester City made light work of Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Etihad on Monday evening – and yet Pep Guardiola believes there is even more room for improvement as his side continue to hunt down Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Gabriel Jesus scored twice as Manchester City moved back within four points of Premier League leaders Liverpool with a comfortable 3-0 win over 10-man Wolves.

The Brazilian struck after just 10 minutes at the Etihad Stadium and added a penalty before the break as City made easy work of their visitors, who had Willy Boly sent off after 19 minutes.

City wrapped up victory when a Kevin De Bruyne cross was turned into his own net by Wolves captain Conor Coady.

But Guardiola thought his side could play better, stressing after the match that he did not think City were aggressive enough.

“We have played a lot of time with ten against 11 and we should be more aggressive in our attacking play, but we have a lot of matches in our minds and our legs,” he said.

“We were solid and didn't give away many chances so it is three points to keep the pressure on the team at the top of the table.

“They defend deep with 10 men so it is not easy even with one more player. We have to be more aggressive to put the ball in the box. Kevin [de Bruyne] came on and crossed the ball 10 times. That is the way we have to play [in that situation]. If it is pass, pass, pass it is more difficult.”

Guardiola was also full of praise for Jesus, who continued his fine run of form with a first-half brace.

“Everybody wants to do their best but it is important for a striker to score goals and he has got six in the last two matches,” Guardiola said.

“When you have a league campaign, you can drop points. We have incredible numbers so far but we can do even better. Of course we weren't in our excellent moments against Leicester and Crystal Palace but it is normal, and we came back in the games after by creating chances and conceding few.”
