Pep Guardiola has ruled Sergio Aguero out of Manchester City’s trip to Tottenham Hotspur this weekend and cast doubt over whether the Argentine will feature again this season as he struggles to return to full fitness.

Aguero picked up a knee injury in training last month ahead of the victory at Stoke City, eventually returning to action last weekend with a 14-minute cameo in City’s Manchester derby defeat.

The 29-year-old came off the bench again during Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final defeat to Liverpool, but he will play no part in this weekend’s trip to Tottenham after suffering a setback.

At his pre-match press conference on Friday, Guardiola claimed Aguero was in fact still injured before Liverpool’s visit, but the Argentine played through the pain barrier in the hope of helping his team-mates reach the semi finals.

“Aguero is injured,” Guardiola said. “He was injured before the game [against Liverpool] but he made a huge effort to help us in 10-15 minutes.

“That’s why he could not play from the beginning. The people talk a lot, not knowing exactly what happened before the game. He was not ready.”

When asked when City’s all-time leading goalscorer might be able to return, Guardiola suggested that Aguero is also a doubt for Swansea City’s visit to the Etihad on 22 April and may only be ready for “the last games” of the campaign.

“I said he’s not ready. I don’t know. We cannot forget he was one month injured,” Guardiola said of Aguero.

“He made a huge effort because after the action from Ashley Young against United with the problem with knee he could not train, he played the last 20 minutes [against Liverpool] and after the game he said: ‘I cannot run, I have a lot of pain, I cannot run’”

“I don’t know about Swansea if he’ll be ready but hopefully for the last games if we need him and especially for the World Cup.”

City, who need six points to be crowned champions, will also be without John Stones, who is struggling with a thigh problem.

Fernandinho is suspended for the trip to Wembley while long-term absentee Benjamin Mendy also remains sidelined.
