Pep Guardiola believes Manchester City must win more to be considered English football’s greatest-ever side despite shattering three Premier League records with their victory over Brighton and Hove Albion on Wednesday night.

The newly-crowned champions have 97 points, 31 wins and 105 goals to their name – more than any other side in Premier League history on each count.

The all-time top-flight record for wins will be surpassed if City beat Southampton in their final game of the season on Sunday and three points at St Mary’s would also see Guardiola’s side reach 100-point mark.

Guardiola hailed his side for maintaining their “intensity” during these final weeks of the season, having wrapped up the title in mid-April, but he claimed he must see more from his players before they can be considered English football’s greatest.

“It’s so good,” he said of City’s record-breaking evening. “We had that to maintain our level all the season, try to break the record, maintain our intensity.

“87 points a lot of goals and wins, that’s a consequence of the season we’ve done. Now it’s one more game, we’ll try for 100 points and finish this almost perfect season.

“We’ve spoken about trying to write a new page. I cannot forget the ‘80s with Liverpool dominating English football, ‘90s Sir Alex Ferguson, we are so happy he is out of intensive care today.

“You have to make more years to do that but one season we were better than all of them. We are not aware of what we’ve done. Records will be broken but the team who are going to break it have to do many good things.

Guardiola added: “To be the best we have to win more. To be alongside United, Liverpool, we have to win more. Three in six years Premier Leagues, but in this moment just one, but we’ve done better than the others, we cannot deny.

“In terms of stats and numbers we were the best this season, we are so satisfied. A team will arrive and do better but they’ll have to do really well.”
