From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has filmed adverts for 2019-20 Manchester United season tickets, despite not knowing if he will still be at Old Trafford come August.

Solskjaer has won 12 of his 15 games in charge since succeeding Jose Mourinho as caretaker in December but is yet to learn whether he has done enough to take the manager’s role full-time.

That has not stopped United from releasing a range of Solskjaer merchandise, however, nor has it prevented the Norwegian from helping to bring fans through the door for the new season.

Ahead of his side welcoming Southampton to Old Trafford, Solskjaer was asked whether supporters deserve on his position, at a time when many are renewing their season tickets.

“I've done a photo shoot or a video shoot on season tickets so I'm pleading for them to get their season tickets,” he said.

“If it's me as a supporter or manager I don't know, but they should still buy their season tickets because the club is going somewhere.”

Solskjaer did not find filming the commercial material strange. “It'll be stranger to see yourself in the video if you're not here,” he said.

“But no, it's not strange doing it. I think if my kids see a commercial with me in it and I'm back home in Norway, that'll be strange probably.

“That’s just part of being here, the commercial. Part of being a player here as well. Suddenly you're not here anymore and you see your picture. That's how it is.”

Solskjaer has made no secret of his desire for the role and his cause will be helped if he can take United above Tottenham Hotspur and Mauricio Pochettino, his main rival for the job.

United are five points off Spurs, who have suffered back-to-back defeats in the Premier League, and Solskjaer is not ruling out a top-three finish behind Liverpool and Manchester City.

“It's important to look up and upwards. Of course the results have meant that we can challenge Tottenham now for that spot,” he said.

“It’s us, Chelsea, Arsenal. We're all chasing them. It's going to be an exciting race and every single game is going to be very important. You need to make sure tip the balance in your way.

“As I said before, we're five points behind Tottenham and there's 10 games to go. We've definitely got a chance to move up the table so we'll do our best to get up there.

“Every game is a big chance for the players to say that we want to stay and it's the same for everyone around the coaching staff.

“We want to improve everyone, that's our job. The better we do the bigger the chance to be here.”
