Van Gaal’s stewardship of English football’s best-supported club has attracted criticism from the get go, with the start to his debut 2014/15 season being their worst in 25 years.
An uninspiring, conservative style of play bore out drab draws and embarrassing defeats, including a 4-0 reverse to MK Dons in Van Gaal’s first cup tie.
However, the Dutchman managed to achieve the minimum target of Champions League qualification in his first season, with key wins over rivals Liverpool and Manchester City spurring his side on the claim fourth place.
Significant transfer spending followed in the summer, with the likes of Memphis Depay, Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger all arriving, but even though a few new faces came to Old Trafford, the same lifeless brand of football remained.
United were eliminated in the Champions League group stages and subsequently entered the Europa League, where they suffered a first leg defeat to minnows FC Midtjylland.
Van Gaal’s men progressed, thanks to the heroics of youngster Marcus Rashford, but were unceremoniously dumped out of the competition by Liverpool in the next round.
United went on to miss out on a top-four finish, finishing behind City on goal difference, and though they tasted FA Cup glory just two days ago, Van Gaal has now been relieved of his duties.
