The striker, since sold to Bayer Leverkusen, missed a spot-kick in the 4-0 Champions League play-off win over Club Brugge. With the Mexico international lying on the ground after his botched effort, the cameras caught Van Gaal giving assistant manager Ryan Giggs a withering look.
Mexico legend Hugo Sanchez has said Van Gaal was unprofessional and that it was an example of how the Manchester United manager treats people unfairly.
"Van Gaal made a bad decision – and it's not one he's done for the first time, he's done it 50,000 times," Sanchez told Futbol Picante.
He continued: "I've coached and a coach cannot do that to their own player. I'd go out and applaud him and tell him to trust in himself. But that look he gave Giggs… What a scoundrel.
"It was a bad game for Chicharito but any player in the world can do that. Van Gaal is a scoundrel; hopefully those in England realise he is a bad person and treats his players poorly.
"He should be professional. The players deserve professional and humane treatment."
This was the face Van Gaal pulled...
Bundesliga high flyers Bayer Leverkusen unveiled Hernandez at a press conference on Tuesday following his £7.3m move where the striker said: "I want to go back to feeling important and happy. I want to find happiness.
"Bayer made me feel important and loved and coming here was not a difficult decision to make. They made me feel wanted."
