Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal was delighted with his team's performance and stated that it was the best they had played since he arrived at the club - despite losing 1-0 to Chelsea.
Van Gaal may have seen his side's six-match winning streak come to an end, but the Dutchman was more than happy with their performance.
"It is the best I have seen of my team this season," he said. "I'm very disappointed with the result.
"We have created. In the second half we created eight (chances) and Chelsea three, that is unbelievably good.
"We were the dominant team on the pitch but we lost. In football, the result is everything.
"I have said to the boys that we make an improvement every week, a step forward, and that is the most important thing.
"Of course we are not the champions - I did not expect that, our goals were also lower.
"The main goal is that we are progressing as a team and we have done that today.
"We also need results in football. It is not always the best team that wins."
