Riyad Mahrez missed a late penalty to let Liverpool off the hook and cost Manchester City a momentum-boosting victory as the hotly-anticipated encounter at Anfield finished in a 0-0 draw.

A frantic start saw Liverpool take the fight to City and the trio of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino gave the reigning Premier League champions plenty to worry about over the opening 20 minutes.

But City, who were without captain Vincent Kompany and midfielder Kevin De Bruyne – the latter failing to recover from his knee injury in time to feature – held firm and had the better of the first-half chances when Mahrez saw an effort saved from close range by Alisson.

City grew into the game in the second half, and the game looked to be theirs when referee Martin Atkinson awarded an 86th-minute penalty to City after Virgil van Dijk brought down Leroy Sane in the area.

But with Sergio Aguero off the pitch having been substituted, Mahrez stepped up to take the penalty, only to blaze his effort over the crossbar with a woeful attempt.
