Liverpool made a real statement in their top-four pursuit last Friday as they played what Jurgen Klopp described as ‘football like hell’ to beat Chelsea 2-1 at Stamford Bridge. It was their third big scalp of the season so far after wins against Arsenal and Leicester added to the draw away to Tottenham.

Hull have also enjoyed a good start to the season with seven points from their opening five games but were humbled 4-1 at home to Arsenal last time out. They will be missing Jake Livermore after his red card for handball but will be buoyed from their 2-1 EFL Cup win over Stoke in midweek.

It’s a big game for…

Loris Karius. Klopp has dropped a big hint that the summer signing from Mainz will be his first choice goalkeeper even though his only start of the season was during the 3-0 EFL Cup win over Derby in midweek. There have been calls for Simon Mignolet to be dropped for a while so Karius must take his chance.

Best stat…

Hull have named an unchanged side for all five games of this season. The last time a side did this for longer was Aston Villa when they named the same side for a run of seven games in the 2008/09 season.

Remember when...

Fernando Torres scored a hat-trick as Liverpool hammered Hull 6-1 at Anfield in September 2009. Steven Gerrard and a Ryan Babel brace completed the scored – the Reds’ biggest ever win over Hull.

Player to watch…

Philippe Coutinho. The Liverpool playmaker has scored twice this season and is the creative spark for Klopp’s team. He has willing runners Adam Lallana and Roberto Firmino alongside him and should thrive in the what could be a fairly open game against Hull’s depleted squad.

Hull have named the same team in each of their opening five games and although Livermore is suspended, the team won’t be as fresh and Coutinho could exploit that by finding ample space to operate.
