Everton defender Tony Hibbert caused an internet storm after being handed his first start for the Toffees since December 2012.

His appearance in the first XI was the first time Hibbert, 32, had started a game for the Toffees in 666 days.

With Sylvain Distin dropped by Roberto Martinez after a string of poor performances this season, youngster John Stones was moved into the middle and Hibbert was given the unenviable task of facing Raheem Sterling, Adam Lallana, Lazar Markovic and Mario Balotelli.

Here are some of the best tweets on the Toffees cult hero.
