Sturridge took part in a full session and emerged unscathed. His return to the training pitch, however, is being treated as a tentative first step on his road back to the first team, and he will be monitored by Liverpool’s medical staff this week.
He will almost certainly not feature against Sunderland on Saturday, or against West Ham in the FA Cup the following Tuesday, but it does raise the prospect of the 26-year-old returning in time for the Capital One Cup final against Manchester City later this month.
Sturridge has not played for Liverpool since the 2-0 defeat against Newcastle United on December 6, with Klopp, the Liverpool manager insisting the player needs an extended period on the training pitch before he is considered for the first team. However, a series of setbacks have halted his progress. In his entire Liverpool career Sturridge has featured in just 45 per cent of games.
Fellow striker Divock Origi is expected to resume training on Thursday having been sidelined with a hamstring injury since Boxing Day. Philippe Coutinho is also expected to return.
