Your support makes all the difference.Liverpool owner John W Henry has spoken for the first time about the £75m departure of Luis Suarez to Barcelona, saying the parting of the ways was inevitable.
“It was time for Luis and time for the club to make a break,” he said. “He brought so much to the club but we brought a lot to Luis. I think you will still see a very explosive Liverpool now.”
Henry was speaking at Fenway Park, home of his Boston Red Sox baseball team, where Liverpool played their second game since selling the controversial striker, losing a tour friendly to Roma 1-0.
The winning goal came in the final minute via Marco Borriello, who spent the second half of last season on loan at West Ham United. The striker steered the ball home from a corner through the legs of 20-year-old left-back Jack Robinson, despite being pressured by Daniel Agger.
Manager Brendan Rodgers is strengthening the squad with the Suarez money and having already signed forwards Adam Lallana and Lazar Markovic is closing in on the QPR striker Loic Remy and Southampton defender Dejan Lovran.
Elsewhere, Tottenham beat Toronto at BMO Field 3-2, with record signing Erik Lamela scoring twice in the first half. Former Spurs striker Jermain Defoe went close before both teams made changes at half-time allowing Toronto to bring the scores level. But Andros Townsend curled home with five minutes left to earn Spurs a first win of their tour, after Saturday’s 3-3 draw with Seattle Sounders
Manchester City picked up a 4-1 victory over MLS champions Sporting Kansas City at Arrowhead Stadium.
Meanwhile, the Croatian FA has said it will examine claims of racism against City’s Seko Fofana during a friendly Under-21 match with HNK Rijeka on Tuesday, which was abandoned when City coach Patrick Vieira took his players off the pitch.
