Liverpool are set to offer academy graduate and fan favourite Jon Flanagan a new three-year contract at the club, according to reports.

The 23-year-old right back, whose current deal expires at the end of this season, has recently returned to the first-team squad following a serious knee injury.

Flanagan, who required several operations during the course of a 20-month-long layoff, has made five appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side since his recovery and, according to The Guardian, has impressed his manager enough to warrant new terms.

The future of the local-born full back, who established himself at the club during 2013/14’s title challenge under former manager Brendan Rodgers, has been in doubt over recent months, with talks over an extension progressing slowly.

However, the club and Flanagan’s representatives are believed to have reached a new agreement, which is reportedly close to being signed.

Flanagan, a local-born fan favourite, was greeted with a standing ovation when he made his first-team return from the bench in the FA Cup third round replay against Exeter City in January.

Anfield’s home support rose to its feet once again in the opening minutes of the recent victory over Manchester City when the 23-year-old forcefully challenged former team-mate Raheem Sterling.

Flanagan was not included in Liverpool’s Europa League squad and will not play any part in tonight’s trip to Manchester United.
