Liverpool don't care about Manchester City's results in Premier League title race, insists Jordan Henderson

Liverpool are not interested in Manchester City’s results and expect Pep Guardiola’s men to keep winning in the Premier League title race, according to captain Jordan Henderson.

City remain two points clear of Liverpool at the top of the table after 15 matches after both teams won in midweek, with Guardiola’s side surviving a late scare to beat Watford 2-1 at Vicarage Road while their closest rivals came from behind to secure a 3-1 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor.

This weekend offers a potential opportunity for a change in leader, with City travelling to Stamford Bridge to take on fourth-placed Chelsea while Liverpool face high-flying Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium, but Henderson insists Jurgen Klopp’s men are not expecting to be dealt any favours by City’s opponents.

“We are not really interested in City, to be honest, because there is a long way to go,” he said. “We know how good they are, we expect them to win.

“We just expect ourselves to win games and perform to the level that we have been – and if we do that we can keep winning. But we just focus on game by game and it doesn’t really matter about anybody else.

“The games are coming thick and fast, a lot of games in a short space of time but we showed we can use the squad and still perform to the level we know we are capable of and win games – and that’s a big plus for us.”

Liverpool’s stirring fightback at Burnley was inspired partly by Naby Keita, who shone at Turf Moor despite struggling to hold down a regular starting spot since arriving from RB Leipzig in a £48 million deal last summer.

Henderson is backing the Senegal international to go from strength to strength after overcoming the back injury that hampered him in October.

“He started the season brilliantly and obviously then getting an injury set him back a little bit,” Henderson said of Keita. “But you can see how good a player he is.

“That shot with the left foot and the save from [Joe] Hart was fantastic. In his overall play, he is comfortable on the ball and he helps build up play from the back.

“He drives the ball forward, which is big for us. I thought he was outstanding, along with everybody else really.”
