Jamie Carragher explains why Liverpool can’t be handed Premier League title with season suspended due to coronavirus
The Reds are 25 points clear with just nine games remaining, but the league will now not resume until at least May
Jamie Carragher insists Liverpool cannot be handed the title but the authorities must get “creative” next season to ensure the current campaign can be completed.
The coronavirus has forced the Premier League to extend its ban until the end of April, while the deadline to finish the current campaign by 1 June has been lifted.
But despite the Reds holding a 25-point lead and only nine games remaining, Carragher insists it would “not feel right” if the title was handed to Jurgen Klopp’s side and claims the season must be finished, no matter the impact on next season.
“We shouldn’t hide away from how much football means to us all. Right up and down the country. It doesn’t bother me when it is [that football restarts], but I don’t see how you can stop it,” Carragher said on The Debate.
“Champions League places, Man City’s situation, Sheffield United – they’re just behind Man United, they win the game in hand and they go above them. Does that mean they take the place?
“Aston Villa have a game in hand to get out of the bottom three. There was talk of the top two in the Championship going into the Premier League, then everybody is happy, there’s no relegation anywhere through the divisions. But how would Fulham feel?
“Leeds blew it last year when they were in the same position. There are so many questions if you stop the league right now.
“I think it’s going to be a mess. I’m not saying Liverpool should be given the league, for me, if the league doesn’t carry on, there’s something not quite right. We know Liverpool will go on to win the league, but if the league stops, it doesn’t feel right.

“There would always be something there that doesn’t feel quite right about it.
“Liverpool is not the most important thing. It’s the teams who will lose huge sums of money in different divisions. How do you affect next season’s Champions League? This season has to finish because it impacts next season because of European places.
“Whenever the date is when we get back to playing football, even if it’s August or September, it has to be finished and you have to be creative with next season.
“Eventually they will have to find a way to make it work.”
