Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy passed his century of goals for the club with a second-half double strike that secured a first win for new manager Brendan Rodgers.

It was a well-deserved three points for the Foxes who had dominated the game for long periods. They led through Youri Tielemans goal only to be pegged back by Fulham sub Floyd Ayite.

But Vardy’s late intervention made sure of victory as he became the first Leicester striker since Gary Lineker to reach the 100-goal landmark.

Dismal runs of recent form had prompted both of these clubs to make managerial appointments in an attempt to reverse their fortunes.

Although Fulham’s Scott Parker had an immediate impact in terms of the team’s performance the loss to Chelsea was the side’s ninth in their last 10 games. Nevertheless Parker elected to keep faith with the team that lined up in the West London derby.

Rodgers opted for a more attacking line-up in an effort to get all three points in his first home match. Out went Wes Morgan, one of the three centre backs he had used at Watford, and in came Demarai Gray to give the Foxes more penetration on the left wing.

And it was Leicester who started the brighter of the two teams with Tielemans driving into the box and swapping passes with Harvey Barnes before blazing a shot high over the bar.

Wilfred Ndidi sent another shot flying over Sergio Rico’s goal after Gray had won the ball in midfield while Ricardo Perreira scuffed a great chance from a corner.

Ominously for Fulham they could not keep possession in in their own half while Vardy was looking sharp and ready to punish them on the counterattack. The Leicester striker raced through chasing a Barnes pass on 19 minutes and was only prevented from scoring by a brilliantly timed tackle from Havard Nordtveit.

Two minutes later Calum Chambers lost the ball and Ndidi sent Vardy through on goal once again with the Leicester striker squaring the ball unselfishly to Tielemans. The young Belgian midfielder, who is on loan from Monaco, walked the ball into an empty net to register his first goal for the club.

The home side continued to threaten with Barnes clever flick setting Tielemans away to tee up James Madison whose shot flew narrowly wide of Rico’s post. Moments later it was Vardy bearing down on goal once again only to be denied for the second time by a Nordtveit tackle as he tried to pull the trigger.

Rico spilled the ball from Ben Chilwell’s fierce shot and was relieved to find nobody following up for Leicester as he regathered at the second attempt. The Fulham keeper did better to hold another Tielemans as his side headed for the break relieved to only be trailing by the one goal.

Parker brought on Ayite for the anonymous Ryan Sessegnon and was rewarded almost immediately as the sub levelled the scores with Fulham’s first shot of the match – although his goal-bound shot was deflected past Kasper Schmeichel by a fortuitous deflection off Harry Maguire.

The dangerous Barnes went close to restoring Leicester’s lead with a curling shot that looked destined to go in until Rico produced a stunning save to divert it wide with his fingertips.

At the other end Schmeichel matched his counterpart to push Aleksander Mitrovic’s glancing header wide at the expense of a corner.

But it was Vardy who found the back of the net sprinting on to Maddison’s through ball and putting a low shot past Rico. And with four minutes later he smashed home Leicester’s third goal to make sure Rodgers enjoyed a winning start at the King Power Stadium.
