From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

Wayne Rooney, for so many years the poster boy of the Premier League, looked set to bag the first goal of the new season. However, Kyle Walker had other ideas.

The Tottenham defender put into his own net at Old Trafford to gift the home side the opening goal of the first game of the new campaign.

Ashley Young broke down the right hand side for Louis van Gaal's side and picked out the unmarked Rooney in the middle of the box. The Manchester United captain took a touch and was just lining up to place his shot past Michel Vorm in the Spurs goal.

But then Walker came flying in to make a last ditch tackle, only to accidentally prod the ball into his own net.
