Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp could not hide his emotions after hearing Bayern Munich, bitter rivals of former club Borussia Dortmund, had suffered a shock defeat by Mainz.

The Bavarian giants had previously won 17 consecutive home matches but Jairo Samperio and Jhon Córdoba strikes for the visitors at the Allianz Arena means Dortmund trail them by just five points at the Bundesliga summit.

Dortmund have now won six of their last seven league matches and saw off Darmstadt courtesy of goals from Adrian Ramos and Erik Durm.

Klopp, who lifted two Bundesliga titles with the club, laughed gleefully following his Liverpool’s side 3-0 victory against Manchester City this Wednesday.

When asked by BBC Sport about the clutch of surprise Premier League results, including defeats for Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, Klopp was in his usual jovial mood.

“I don’t know about the other results, I know Bayern lost,” the German chuckled loudly. “But I think that’s not too important for us.”

Goals by Adam Lallana, James Milner and Roberto Firmino gave the Reds instant revenge against the side who defeated them on Sunday in the Capital One Cup final at Wembley.

Liverpool are now six points adrift of the top four after overcoming City at Anfield.

The different at the top continues to tighten with Leicester, Spurs and Arsenal also dropping points this week.
