Jurgen Klopp missed training on Wednesday ahead of Liverpool’s game with Southampton after falling ill and being admitted to hospital.
The German was being assessed by doctors after feeling under the weather before he was taken to hospital where he underwent for further checks.
Liverpool confirmed that Klopp was not currently scheduled to stay overnight and is due to return home on Wednesday evening, although he would require further check-ups in the coming days.
The Reds said in a statement: “Jürgen Klopp has attended a hospital appointment today as a precautionary measure, after feeling ill.
“He is being assessed by doctors and will be absent from training on Wednesday as a result. There are currently no plans for Jürgen to remain in hospital beyond his appointment and he will therefore return home this evening; however, he may require further check-ups in the coming days.
“The club urges that the privacy of Jürgen, his family and other patients is respected while attending hospital visits.”
No precise details of the complaint have been revealed although it is not thought to be serious and no surgery is required but it is unclear whether he will be healthy enough to sit in the dugout at Anfield on Saturday to take charge of Liverpool against Southampton.
The majority of the squad were back at Melwood in the 50-year-old’s absence following the international break, including Mohamed Salah and Philippe Coutinho.
It would not be the first time Klopp has been forced to miss a Liverpool game after he sat out the home match with Sunderland in February 2016 with appendicitis.
His assistants Peter Krawietz and Zelko Buvac took control of the game on that occasion although the club seem confident Wednesday’s hospital visit was more precautionary, with Klopp already feeling much better.
It is as of yet unknown whether he will take training on Thursday or Friday.
