The Portuguese coach’s representatives spent much of Tuesday involved in positive talks with the club’s executive vice-chairman, Ed Woodward.
The length of Mourinho’s contract and his salary have both been settled upon and only issues regarding image rights are left to be negotiated.
These final matters are not thought to be major stumbling blocks and the former Internazionale and Real Madrid manager is expected to be appointed within the next 48 hours, with confirmation likely to be made on Thursday.
It is understood that Mourinho, who was sacked by Chelsea last December following a calamitous start to the club’s title defence, has been offered a three-year deal by United.
Mourinho’s long-time assistant, Rui Faria, will also join the club – a move which could lead to Ryan Giggs, Van Gaal’s assistant and United’s most decorated player, taking on a lesser role.
The Welshman could bring his 29-year-long association with the club will come to an end if he decides to reject Mourinho’s offer and forge his coaching career elsewhere.
Giggs has been part of United’s backroom staff for the past three years and acted as an interim manager at the end of the 2013/14 season, following the dismissal of David Moyes.
As revealed by The Independent on Tuesday, Mourinho has already identified Karim Benzema, the Real Madrid striker, as a priority target ahead of this summer's transfer window.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marquinhos, both currently contracted to Paris Saint-Germain, and John Stones, the Everton defender, are also believed to be of interest to the Portuguese coach.
