Jon Flanagan faces up to nine months on the sidelines having not played a minute of football for Liverpool this season after having further surgery on his injured knee.

The Liverpool defender rose to fame last season as he starred on both the right and left of the back-four, but after a season of heartache following the knee injury he suffered last year, the news will devastate both the 22-year-old and those at the club.

The talented youngster had returned to training in March, but the Liverpool Echo reports that Flanagan has undergone another knee operation and has been ruled out for between six and nine months.

He was operated on by surgeon Andy Williams, the specialist who carried out his original operation, at a hospital in London, and left on Wednesday with the expectation that he will spend the next eight weeks on crutches before starting his rehabilitation.

Flanagan was able to play a half in the recent Liverpool All-Stars game that stood as a send-off for Steven Gerrard, but he had yet to return to the Under-21 squad and had been ruled out for the remainder of the first team’s Premier League campaign.

It’s claimed that Flanagan had not felt pain in his knee, but an irregularity showed up on a scan and rather than risk further, potentially career-ending injury, it was decided he would go under the knife for a third time since suffering the original injury on the club’s pre-season tour of the United States.
