Jewell adds Henchoz to Wigan's list of summer recruits
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. The former Liverpool and Blackburn defender joined the Latics on trial last week after being released by Celtic. He impressed the manager, Paul Jewell, and has been offered a one-year deal. The 30-year-old became Jewell's fourth signing of the summer after the Rotherham goalkeeper Mike Pollitt and the defenders Pascal Chimbonda and Ryan Taylor from Bastia and Tranmere respectively.
"He's still fairly young at 30, but the main thing is he has a lot of experience and that can help us," Jewell said. Henchoz joined Celtic last season after failing to win a place in Rafael Benitez's first team at Liverpool. He had been a key member of the side under the previous manager, Gérard Houllier, and was a linchpin of the 2001 cup treble.
Henchoz first came to England when he joined Blackburn from Hamburg in 1997. He moved to Liverpool in a £3.5m deal two years later.
Another player who has been linked with a move to Wigan, Manchester City's Joey Barton, will be told whether he still has a future at the club within the next 48 hours following a meeting between the manager, Stuart Pearce, and the chairman, John Wardle, today.
The 22-year-old was sent home in disgrace from City's pre-season trip to Thailand last week after getting involved in an altercation with a 15-year-old Everton fan at the team's hotel bar.
A fine of two weeks' wages - suspended from last December when Barton stubbed a lit cigar into the eye of the former reserve team player Jason Tandy at a Christmas party - has already been invoked, although the midfielder faces further punishment following a club investigation.
Barton, and his agent, Struan Marshall, of SFX, will attend the disciplinary meeting in the hope of convincing Pearce and Wardle of his genuine remorse.
City have ruled out the prospect of sacking the former England Under-21 international but, at worst, could place him on the transfer list or, at best, increase the fine and order Barton to attend an anger management course.
