Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel faces up to six weeks on the sidelines after fracturing his hand during the Champions League draw against Copenhagen on Wednesday night.

The 29-year-old Denmark international will see a specialist after injuring his right hand, and is a doubt for the Premier League games against West Brom, Watford, Middlesbrough and Sunderland.

That is a blow for Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri, who was delighted by Schmeichel’s display against Copenhagen that helped his side to the brink of qualification for the last 16 in their maiden Champions League campaign.

“It was a very important save, if they score they win the match,” said Ranieri. “Kasper is fantastic, I have coached a lot of big champions in goal, Kasper is one of these. He has had two perfect seasons for me.

“I am very calm when Kasper is in goal. He is strong, assured and commands the defensive line. He is a very good goalkeeper.”

Leicester captain Wes Morgan added: “He’s showing time after time how good he is. The save he made at the end today was unbelievable, it is right at the end and it’s basically gained us the point.”
