Felipe Anderson fired a second-half equaliser to rescue West Ham a point in a thrilling 1-1 Premier League draw at Huddersfield Town.

Anderson notched his third goal in two games by smashing home a 74th-minute rebound after Alex Pritchard’s first of the season had given Huddersfield a half-time lead.

Huddersfield played some of their best football of the season in the first period when they twice hit the woodwork and will be disappointed not to have clinched the back-to-back Premier League wins they craved.

But the Hammers improved in the second period and created enough chances to have snatched victory themselves.

Steve Mounie was denied his first goal of the season when West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski brilliantly turned his header onto the crossbar in the second minute.

Within the blink of an eye, West Ham then sprang the offside trap at the other end, but Marko Arnautovic’s shot was deflected wide by home goalkeeper Jonas Lossl.

It was a rip-roaring start to Huddersfield’s remembrance game after a minute’s silence had been marked by the bugler’s Last Post.

The Terriers charged into the lead in the sixth minute. Pritchard received the ball back off skipper Jonathan Hogg on the right edge of the penalty area and his left-footed shot wrong-footed Fabianski and rolled into the bottom corner.

Philip Billing’s deep cross from the left soon after curled over Fabianski and struck the inside of the far post.

Town had waited 659 minutes for their first home goal in Monday’s 1-0 defeat of Fulham, but could have had three in the first 15 minutes against the Hammers.

Fabianski rescued the Londoners again in the 27th minute, diving low to his left to keep out a shot from Mounie, who should have scored after being set free into the box by Florent Hadergjonaj.

Huddersfield lost momentum just before half-time after left-back Chris Lowe was carried off on a stretcher due to an injury to his right shoulder. Fellow German and World Cup winner Erik Durm replaced him.

Javier Hernandez was a half-time substitute for Grady Diangana and should have equalised for the Hammers soon after.

Aaron Mooy’s clearance ricocheted back into the area and Hernandez had two bites at the cherry. His initial shot was smothered by Lossl and he then headed the rebound over the crossbar.

Huddersfield were pushed back deeper as West Ham chased the game, but only Issa Diop’s last-ditch tackle prevented Pritchard from making it 2-0 after he had raced clear.

The visitors went close through Pedro Obiang’s header and his replacement Michail Antonio rifled a shot over the crossbar before they equalised in the 74th minute.

Hernandez and Antonio both had shots charged down, but Anderson made sure as he smashed the ball into the top corner.

The Londoners almost struck again, but Diop’s thumping header from Robert Snodgrass’s corner was headed off the goal-line by Mooy.

Durm flashed a low long-range effort just wide as the Terriers mounted a last hurrah, but West Ham held firm for a point.
