Mauricio Pochettino has conceded that Harry Kane could be out “for the rest of the season” after the Tottenham Hotspur striker suffered another injury to his left ankle in a 1-0 victory over Manchester City on Tuesday night.

Just six weeks after coming back from a similar problem, Kane twisted his ankle in a challenge with Fabian Delph and immediately disappeared down the tunnel.

It is his third such injury in 13 months and now Spurs will be waiting to find out whether he will be back in time to help not only Champions League progression this season, but also qualification for next year.

And after the match Pochettino conceded the “very sad” injury to the Spurs striker could rule the 25-year-old out for the remainder of the campaign.

“It's very, very sad,” Pochettino said. “It's going to be tough and we're going to miss him - maybe for the rest of the season.”

Pochettino added in his post-match press conference that he fears Kane has damaged ankle ligaments for the fifth time in his career.

“If you see the action it is an action that maybe he twists the ankle and can damage the ligaments again,” Pochettino said. “We need to check in the next few days. It is so painful. But can we do now, it is impossible, we can only look forward, hope it is not a big issue and try to recover as soon as possible.”

Pochettino had words with Delph immediately after the incident and then spoke to him again at the final whistle. Pochettino revealed that he told Delph that he was fortunate to avoid a red card for the tackle that injured Kane.

“I was talking with Fabien Delph, he was so upset and so aggressive with Harry after the action,” Pochettino said.

“I tried to get him to understand that it was not the intention from Harry or from him to damage each other, it was a tough action. Harry twisted his ankle, touched the ball and he [Delph] stepped on his ankle. I said to him you are lucky, I was checking on VAR and maybe it was technically a red card.

“Both were fighting for the ball with no intention to damage each other. Harry wanted to talk to him as it was so aggressive but it was friendly the conversation. There is no problem between us.”
