Gabriel Jesus has reassured Manchester City supporters that he was not seriously hurt by his collision with the post during Monday’s 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Jesus received lengthy treatment on the pitch from City’s medical staff after crashing into the upright while attempting to convert a Leroy Sané cross midway through the first half.

The Brazilian had already opened the scoring by that point and played on after the apparent head injury, adding City’s second from the penalty spot a quarter of an hour later.

Jesus was eventually replaced by Sergio Aguero after 76 minutes and revealed after the final whistle that the injury was not in fact to his head, nor was it as severe as it first seemed.

“It was my neck,” the 21-year-old said. “If it had been my head it would have been more dangerous but I am OK, just a little bump.”

Jesus’ brace against Wolves maintained his promising start to the new year, with seven goals in City’s last three games.

The striker endured something of a difficult and inconsistent 2018 in front of goal and fell behind Aguero in the pecking order at the Etihad, but he is delighted with his recent return to form.

“It’s important to me because I am a striker who plays for a big club with amazing players, management and staff, so I need to score goals,” he said. “But I helped the team by playing well. The team played very well to win the game.

“It’s very important to score goals – I am feeling good and my confidence is better for scoring goals. It’s the first time I have scored so many [seven in his last three], so I am so happy, but everyone played well.”
