Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Raheem Sterling - BUR (A)
Manchester City’s run of excellent fixtures is about to end but a punt on Sterling could still pay off. Rested at the weekend, he scored and assisted on his last outing against West Bromwich Albion and is likely to return to the starting line-up at Turf Moor.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin - LEE (A)
Everton were the big disappointment of the weekend, heavily backed but drawing a blank against Newcastle. Calvert-Lewin retains our faith for an evening up against Leeds’ leaky defence but is already on thin ice.
Joao Cancelo - BUR (A)
Like Sterling, Cancelo should return away to Burnley after sitting out against Sheffield United. The right-back has the most explosive potential of City’s defenders, as he showed at the Hawthorns last week, and comes up against the top flight’s second-lowest scorers.
Wilfried Zaha - NEW (A)
Investing in Crystal Palace’s attack is rarely wise but for a short-term punt, Zaha is worth consideration. Roy Hodgson’s side have a promising run of fixtures, starting away at Newcastle. Leeds, Burnley, Brighton and Fulham all follow.
Edinson Cavani - SOU (A)
It’s worth exercising caution with United’s attack and particularly Cavani, who is subject to rotation as a 34-year-old, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seems to prefer the Uruguayan as his central striker. At just £7.9m, he could be a calculated gamble.
Captaincy
If in doubt, captain Mohamed Salah. Brighton’s visit to Anfield offers no guarantee of returns but Salah’s brace at West Ham makes him the outstanding candidate, especially if Sadio Mané is not fit to start.
There’s a case to be made for Bruno Fernandes against an injury-hit Southampton but, given his form, it’s not a particularly strong one. Raheem Sterling and Joao Cancelo are wildcard shouts if you’re feeling lucky.
Clean sheets
Time to go all in on Manchester City’s defence for one last time before their fixtures stiffen up again and difficult decisions have to be made.
Liverpool have problems at the back but are probably the next best bet. It’s hard to back others with confidence, but Leicester City, Arsenal and even Sheffield United are decent shouts.
Best XI
Ramsdale; Alexander-Arnold, Cancelo, Holding; Salah, Fernandes, Sterling, Zaha, Raphinha; Calvert-Lewin, Bamford
