Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Sam Allardyce held further talks with Everton on Tuesday and is now expected to be confirmed as their new manager.
The Independent revealed on Monday that the former England manager was back in talks with the Goodison Park club after they failed to spring Marco Silva from his contract with Watford.
They were hoping to secure him on a deal until the end of the season, with sources claiming they planned to return for Silva next summer, but Allardyce is keen for a longer-term contract to offer more job security.
While the 63 year-old isn’t expected to be in the dugout for Wednesday night’s visit of West Ham United and former Toffees boss David Moyes, Allardyce could be in charge by the weekend and David Unsworth appeared to acknowledge in his pre-match press conference on Tuesday that the tilt against the Hammers would be the last of his disappointing spell as caretaker.
"As we sit here right now, I believe the board are talking to a few people,” he said.
"Talks are ongoing, but nothing has been finalised yet with anybody. So I continue to do what I was asked to do five weeks ago."
Asked directly about Allardyce, Unsworth said: "Sam is a top manager, but I think it would be wrong of me to talk about individuals.
"I have seen the names that have been bandied about - all top managers. Whether there's truth in the names of some, or all, or none, I don't know.
"But whoever gets the honour of being Everton manager will have my full support and my full backing."
Everton have won just one of the seven games under Unsworth, losing five, and fan opinion turned sharply with their last two outings - a 5-1 home loss to Atalanta and a 4-1 reverse at Southampton.
Unsworth added: "I think we need our best players fit, quickly, some proven Premier League recruitment in early January and I think we need to win a couple of games and get confidence flying again.
"When confidence is low, it takes a bit of time to build that back up. I don't think there's a quick fix - I think whoever gets the job needs time, patience, support and backing."
