From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. The future of Wigan manager Roberto Martinez will not be decided until next week but chairman Dave Whelan is positive about holding on to the Spaniard.

Martinez yesterday had asked for 24 hours to consider his next move, but after meeting Whelan again today it is the chairman who has now gone away to consider whether he can match his manager's ambitions.

And he stressed the discussions were solely focused on taking Wigan forward and had not touched on Martinez's personal situation.

"We have had a good, constructive talk - nothing about wages it is all about the club and can we move it forward in terms of the training facilities and youth development," Whelan told Press Association Sport.

"It is all tied up in that. He wants to do certain things and I'm hoping I can assist in that but I want a day or two to look at it.

"I don't want to say yes until I've had time to think about it.

"It will be Monday before I can promise anything."
