Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Souness' first two summer buys will definitely play some part in the match as the Magpies seek to overturn a 2-1 first-leg deficit at St James' Park. Jermaine Jenas could return after missing the trip to Spain last week with a hamstring injury, but Souness' other new signing, the defender Craig Moore, will not figure.

Souness is not underestimating the size of his side's task tonight with a final against either Lazio or Marseilles lined up for the winners. Souness admitted: "We knew we would be playing some tough teams in this competition and in my opinion we have got the hardest one. It is tough to play a team like Deportivo when you would like to be a bit fitter. We have got to keep one eye on our first Premiership game against Arsenal while at the same time trying to win this one."

Souness is need of some more summer signings, most urgently a striker, and has been linked with several over the last couple of months. "Mark Viduka, Nicolas Anelka and Michael Owen are all top strikers and the facts speak for themselves," he said.

"If we were to get that type of player in we would have a very good squad. We need four more new players and we need to do it sooner rather than later."

Newcastle United (4-4-2, probable): Given; Carr, Boumsong, Taylor, Elliott; Bowyer, Butt, Jenas, N'Zogbia; Milner, Shearer.

Deportivo La Coruña: (4-5-1, probable): Molina; Manuel Pablo, Romero, Cesar, Capdevila; Sergio, De Gutman, Victor, Valeron, Munitis; Jimenez Tejada.

Referee: H Fleischer (Ger).
