David Moyes and Paul Lambert both insisted that their teams played well after a poor 1-1 draw at the London Stadium that raised questions about both sides.

West Ham were happier with the point because of their superior league position and Moyes said afterwards that “the important thing was to make sure we did not lose”. But although West Ham struggled to take the initiative against a Stoke side devoid of confidence, Moyes said he was proud. “The play throughout was one of the better performances we have had with the ball since I’ve been here,” Moyes said. He admitted that reporters may not agree with him.

Paul Lambert saw his team denied what would have been their first win in three months. He too said that his team had played well and that this level of performance would keep Stoke up.

“We deserved something from the game, we played a really good game,” Lambert said. “Performance wise, it was very good. If the team had played this way from August, one I wouldn’t be here and two we wouldn’t be in the position we’re in.”

Lambert sounded a positive note about Stoke’s home game with Burnley on Sunday. “We are playing well and we can put the cat amongst the pigeons on Sunday,” he said. “There won’t be many stadiums rocking the way ours can rock on Sunday. We have to win.”
