Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck is worth almost £10million more than what Arsene Wenger paid for him in August - despite the striker scoring just four Premier League goals last season.
Wenger spent £16m to bring the striker to the Emirates from Manchester United at the start of the year and although he initially performed well, as soon as Olivier Giroud returned to fitness he struggled to make the starting XI.
Welbeck started 27 matches in total last season, but 15 of those came when Giroud was out between the end of August and the start of December. He eventually scored eight goals in all competitions.
According to the football think tank the CIES Football Observatory, Welbeck is now worth between €32.1m-€35.3m (£23.55m-£25.9m), more than the likes of team-mates Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere, Barcelona defender Gerard Pique, Manchester United's Juan Mata and Borussia Dortmund forward Marco Reus.
Giroud, who scored 19 goals for Arsenal last season, is ranked 26 places below Welbeck, valued at €25.4m-€27.9m (£18.64m-£20.47m).
The values have been worked out on six criteria, age, position, contract, international status, experience and performance.
Unhappy Liverpool forward Raheem Sterling is the most valuable English player, according to the CIES, worth around £60m. Eden Hazard is the top Premier League player, second only behind Lionel Messi.
