Danny Welbeck’s triumphant return to the Arsenal first team not only secured a pivotal 2-1 victory over Leicester to close the gap to the Premier League leaders to just two points, but it also broke a 2015/16 record.
The Arsenal striker returned from a 10-month injury absence, caused by serious damage he suffered to his knee in the 0-0 draw with Chelsea last April, to head in an injury-time winning goal off a Mesut Özil free-kick after coming off the substitutes’ bench.
The victory reignited Arsenal’s title challenge which, by Arsene Wenger’s own admission, was in danger of dying out had the Gunners slumped to defeat by Leicester which would have left them eight points behind the Foxes and languishing down in third.
However, not only did the goal resurrect Arsenal’s domestic title tilt, it also broke the record for the most tweeted-about moment of the season so far.
In a show of how big Arsenal’s support is on Twitter across the globe, Welbeck’s header beat three other moments in the north London club’s 2015/16 campaign to seize top spot, registering an incredible 51,000 tweets per minute.
