Danny Ings is expected to start for Liverpool for the first time when the club visit bitter rivals Manchester United on Saturday.

The striker has played just 30 minutes so far this season after his summer move from Burnley but with Philippe Coutinho suspended and Joe Allen, Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana injury doubts - as well as longer term concerns Jon Flanagan and Daniel Sturridge - Brendan Rodgers could pair Ings with Christian Benteke.

Ings played in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Wolves during the international break, where he scored two goals.

The 23-year-old had a decent debut season in the top flight, scoring 11 goals in 37 matches for the relegated Clarets.

In two games against Manchester United he also impressed, with Burnley frustrating United to a 0-0 draw at Turf Moor last August, while the striker scored a smart diving header at Old Trafford in a 3-1 defeat.

Liverpool great Ian Rush backed Ings to be a success in Red earlier this week.

"I was very impressed with Danny Ings in pre-season and he is a quality player that can come on," he told Sky Sports. "I think Liverpool have got people on the bench who can come on and win you the game now where maybe a couple of years ago we didn't have that.

"I watched him in pre-season and for me he is very clever with the way that he makes his runs. He plays off the shoulder of the defender and he makes his runs early.

"The likes of Philippe Coutinho, Adam Lallana and Roberto Firmino, who could be playing alongside him, will see those runs and play him in.

"If you don't get the ball three or four times sometimes you can stop making the runs but Ings looks very sharp to me and I think he is good in the box as well."

Rodgers could chose to play just one striker at Old Trafford, with Roberto Firmino behind Christian Benteke if he wanted to go for a more solid look.
