Daniel Sturridge is on course to return for Liverpool in their next Premier League match against Crystal Palace after nearing a return to training from the calf injury that has kept him out of the last four weeks.

Sturridge was initially ruled of action due to a thigh injury that he picked up while on international duty with England in September. The striker was on the verge of a comeback when he suffered the calf injury that has kept him out for eight weeks in total, a period that has seen Liverpool’s form slump drastically that culminated in the 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday.

With Mario Balotelli, Rickie Lambert and Fabio Borini struggling for goals, Sturridge’s return could be crucial for the Reds to get their season back on track, and providing all things go smoothly Sturridge says he’ll be back for the trip to Selhurst Park.

“I'll be ready for that one, God willing,” Sturridge told BT Sport when asked if he’d be fit for the match against the Eagles. He added: “It's the worst feeling to be honest but that's football. Everyone picks injuries up.”

Sturridge scored 21 goals in the league last season as he formed a formidable partnership with Luis Suarez, but Brenda Rodgers’ side have looked a shadow of their former self without the strike-duo. Sturridge has only played three times for his club this season, and has been left out of the England squad to face Slovenia and Scotland in the coming weeks in order to regain his full fitness.

He also travelled to Spain with the rest of the Liverpool squad for the 1-0 defeat against Real Madrid last week, and England manager Roy Hodgson admitted it was “good news” that he would soon be available for selection again.

When asked by Sky Sports News whether he had been in touch with Sturridge, Hodgson said: “No not at the moment but I have it in mind to do so of course.

“I was waiting to see what the situation would be with him (Sturridge). It's very good news to hear that he's travelled but of course before I select him again I would check with the player and the club that we were doing the right thing.”
